最近、「緋色の研究」という物語を読んだ。子供の夏休みの課題「読書感想文」のために借りてあった本ですが、なかなか読む気配がないので、呼び水として20ページほどを音読して聞かせた。結果は、父親の方の呼水となってしまい、子供は読まずに返却ししまった。

タイトルをよくご存知の方も多いと思うが、シャーロックホームズの第一作目。しかも、私としても、初めて読む「シャーロックホームズ」であった。テレビドラマ、映画でよく目にする「シャーロックホームズ」。全世界にマニアが存在し、熱狂的なフアンも存在するようで、映像化するのも脚本家にとっては非常に敷居の高そうな作品だ、という印象。映像のディテールに対して、整合性に対して、など一言をお持ちの方はたくさんおられるだろうけれども、「初めてシャーロックホームズ」を読んだ私の知識量からは到底そこまでカバーできないので、もう少しゆるい話。

よくNHK（日本放送協会）のプログラムで海外制作のドキュメンタリーを、NHKらしいジャンル選択で放送しています。そんなTVプログラムで、最近知ったのですがコッポラの「ゴッドファーザー」シリーズを取材したドキュメンタリーの中で語られていたのが、実はマフィアを描いた映画のようだが、本当はアメリカを描きたかった、そうだ。確かに色々と国内外に問題を抱えていたので、誰かに考えを伝えたい欲求はあったのだろう。

少し違う話では、「スターウォーズ」も実は「フレッシュゴードン」を撮りたかったが、著作権の関係で自前のストリーをつかわざる得なかったそうです。まあ、中世の騎士やら、戦争やらの専門家を招いて、細かなディテールは補強したとも語られていた。

ついつい、忘れるのだけれど、これ世界の常識で、何かについての自分の考え方を発表、公表するのを憚られる時に、架空の物語の体裁を借りて、そこに自分の言いたかったことをこっそり忍ばせた作品は一定数あるようだ。これは、高度な文章能力を必要とされるけれど、もし準備万端整えることができれば、自分が考えた説を、全世界に伝えることも可能である。エンターテイメントとして成功すれば、という注意書きが必要だが。

さて、デザインはどうだろうか。本来、それは言葉にできない、もしくは言葉では表現しづらいものだと思っているが、隠された意図を持ちながら、広く受け入れられるデザインはあるだろうか？少し考えてみたい。
